Down syndrome was discovered in 1886 after Dr. J.L. Down, the man credited with first describing the disorder.
Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that occurs in approximately 1 in 700 births in Canada. Eighty per cent of children with Down syndrome are born to women under the age of 35. The exact cause and prevention of Down syndrome is currently unknown. It is not related to race, religion or socio-economic status.
As in general population, people with Down syndrome have a wide variation of cognitive, social and behavioral abilities and will develop their own unique personalities and talents.
